Antimicrobial Performance of Textiles under Shaking Method
The shaking method is a widely used approach for assessing the antimicrobial performance of textiles. This study aimed to investigate the effect of shaking on microbial growth and survival in cotton fabric samples. The test involved placing two sets of fabric samples, one treated with an antibacterial agent and another without, into separate containers filled with water. The containers were then shaken at different frequencies and durations, such as 8 Hz and 20 seconds or 16 Hz and 40 seconds. The results showed that the fabric samples treated with the antibacterial agent remained free of bacterial growth after shaking for 20 seconds at 8 Hz, while the untreated samples showed significant bacterial growth. However, the treated samples lost their antimicrobial effectiveness after being shaken for 40 seconds at 16 Hz.These results suggest that shaking can enhance the antimicrobial activity of textiles by increasing the exposure of bacteria to the antibacterial agent. Moreover, longer shaking periods may be necessary to maintain the antimicrobial properties of textiles. Overall, this study highlights the potential use of shaking as a novel approach for improving the quality of textiles with built-in antimicrobial features.
Abstract: The antibacterial performance of textiles is a critical issue in the field of hygiene and health. The shaking method has been widely used to evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of fabrics. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial properties of a wide range of textiles using the shaking method. We tested the effectiveness against several commonly found bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed that the shaking method can effectively determine the antibacterial effectiveness of textiles, with some materials displaying higher levels of resistance than others. This information can be useful in selecting appropriate textiles for applications such as healthcare, hospitality, and food service.
